WHY DO WE LOVE OUR SEALERS?
Finding environmentally friendly yet tough sealers has been a personal quest for me for over a decade. I have always been frustrated with creating a natural stone appearance by hand, only to seal it with a product that made it look like it is always under ice, which to me looks artificial on a 95 degree day.
My search led me to two different sealing systems that enable us to deliver a wide range of desired look, feel, and level of required protection: (1) a water-based epoxy sealing system; (2) a unique blend of polyurethane oligomer, acrylates, methacrylates and “photo-initiators” that cures almost instantly when exposed to ultra violet light (“UV cured sealing system”).
(1)
The
water-based epoxy system involves multiple stages: First, we apply a
water-based concrete conditioner that strengthens the concrete and primes the
surface for the second stage. During the second stage, we coat with a
water-based epoxy resin, which creates a stain resistant shield. Third, we
apply a water-based sealer, which can be calibrated to produce sheen or shine
ranging from a very low gloss, as found in nature, to an extremely high gloss
(wet look). Fourth, we apply a maintenance coating that protects the previous
sealers. For surfaces that come in contact with food, we apply a bees wax blend
as the final step.
(2) The UV cured sealing system contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or harmful chemicals and is low in odor. In contrast to the multiple-staged water-based epoxy system, the UV cured sealing system is rolled on and left to penetrate until it is cured by using a commercial ultraviolet light. The penetration and curing achieve an extremely stain resistant and dense protection surface - - but to achieve a finished look requires additional hours of sanding and polishing. Since the sealers we use have little or no VOCs, as opposed to xylene, paint or lacquer thinners, each is much safer to apply and dramatically reduces irritating and toxic fumes. Therefore, we can seal your project indoors without causing bad odors or toxic fumes that would have driven you out of your home.
We have finally found sealing systems that produce a very high performance surface that is stain-resistant, acid-resistant, heat-resistant and abrasion-resistant, as well as antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal. As a result, the surfaces we produce are inherently low maintenance.
